Raising the Calibre

In recent days I’ve been taking it to the Sydney streets armed with an almighty 300mm – my workhorse lens that prompted repeated comparisons of my techniques, to those of a sniper’s. Probably most memorable – while sniping from the sidewalk window at a bar in NY, a stranger next to me leaned over and said: “Maaaan, you’re like a sniper with that thing! Do you hold your breath too when you shoot?” I had never thought about it or realized till then – but after thinking my answer was actually “yes.” – At this range this slightest movement can greatly alter the composition and relative focal-point.

I probably gained a preference for using my less gigantic 80-200mm here in Sydney as it attracts fewer dirty looks and what have you not from random witnesses, but from here on I think I’ll (mainly) be packing the big guns again.

Below – some selected results from the stealthier approach and a closer look at some of the folks up in the CBD — with pure obliviousness.
